Surf Gran Canaria - The North Coast

The North coast hosts some of the best and most consistent surf in Gran Canaria. It receives constant swell from the North Atlantic and holds loads of excellent surf and bodyboard waves. All the spots are very close to each other and very accessible from the road.

Quintanilla

Level: intermediate - expert Tide: mid Crowd: mid – high Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Quintanilla

Quintanilla is the first spot you run into driving west from Las Palmas. Access is easy, through a sandy beach. The fast, left hand wave breaks aproximately 100m from the shore over a rocky bottom, so it´s best to avoid the low tide.

Quintanilla tends to get the most of the north swells and the biggest waves in the north, so it´s a good indicator of what´s happening in the rest of the spots. If it´s not surfable here, it will rarely be surfable anywhere else down the road.

Los Enanos

Level: beginner - expert Tide: mid - low Crowd: mid - high Season: Year round Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Los-Enanos/forecasts/latest/six_day

A beach break that also picks a lot of swell. Can get very packed when La Cicer is too small and people from the city go look for accessible waves in the north. Waves here usually pack a good punch, so a lot of paddling is usually required. Surfable at low to mid tide.

Molokai

Level: beginner - expert Tide: mid - low Crowd: mid – high Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Los-Enanos/forecasts/latest/six_day

This beach break is just west of Los Enanos and you can even paddle between them. Waves are similar to Los Enanos, although usually Molokai has the edge when it comes longer, mellower waves. Depending on the size of the swell, it can be very gentle or it can turn into a very intense experience, so it´s suitable for all levels depending on the conditions.

Same as Los Enanos, it can get crowded when Las Palmas is small. A lot of surf schools like to come here in search of mellow, accessible waves.

Surfable at low to mid tide.

Boquines

Level: intermediate - expert Tide: mid - low Crowd: mid Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Boquines/forecasts/latest/six_day

One of the most accessible pointbreaks, it produces a long, clean right hander suitable for shortboards during N – NE swells. Best to surf at mid to low tide. Be careful of the rocks, as it can become shallow very quick when the tide is too low and the swell is not big enough. Going in and out can be tricky because of the rocks and urchins, but not as much as other spots such as El Lloret.

El Picacho

Level: intermediate - expert Tide: mid - low Crowd: mid Board type: longboard Forecast: https://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/El-Paso_1/forecasts/latest/six_day

Just west of Boquines, this point break has a long right and shorter left, usually more suitable for longboards.

Access is easy through a pebble beach and its best at mid tide.

Derecha del Roque

Level: advanced - expert Tide: mid - low Crowd: mid Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/El-Roque/forecasts/latest/six_day

Derecha del Roque holds maybe the longest wave in the north coast when the conditions are right. It's a right hand point break right in front of El Altillo town suitable for shortboards. Entrance and exit are tricky beacause of the rocks and urchins, and the wave can become really powerful on bigger swells. Only recommended for advanced surfers. Surfable at mid to low tide.

Izquierda del Paso

Level: intermediate - expert Tide: mid - high Crowd: mid Board type: shortboard

La Izquierda del Paso is a left point break just west of Derecha del Roque, in front of El Paso village. Best to surf at high tide because of the rocks sticking out. Doesn´t work on eastern swells.

El Bunker

Level: intermediate - expert Tide: mid - high Crowd: mid Board type: shortboard

This rock bottom left hand point break picks up less swell than poher spots around, so it tends to hold the size when everything else is too big. Beware of the rocks and urchin. Surfable at high tide.

Vagabundos

Level: beginner - expert Tide: mid - low Crowd: mid Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Vagabundo/forecasts/latest/six_day

This beach break is located right in front of San Felipe town. The two main waves are a left hander at the far west end and a right hander on the east end. The waves can be powerful and fast, but they can hold the shape very well if conditions are right. Passing the break can be a challenge on bigger days. Best to surf at mid to low tide.

Summer months offer the best conditions for beginners. It´s a swell magnet during this time and sometimes the only spot with waves.

Surf Gran Canaria – Galdar

If you drive further on the north coast past Vagabundos, you can't help but notice this village of Galdar on the foothills of a volcano. Right behind this volcano there are a bunch of world class surf spots, one of which holds the yearly bodyboard championships "El Fronton King"!

El Frontón

Level: expert Tide: high Crowd: mid – high Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/El-Fronton/forecasts/latest/six_day

More of a bodyboard wave, this powerful, fast, barrelling wave should only be approached by experts. Breaks over a very shallow rock slab, so it's only surfable at high tide. International bodyboard championships are celebrated here every year.

La Guancha

Level: expert Tide: high Crowd: mid – high Board type: shortboard Forecast: https://es.surf-forecast.com/breaks/La-Guancha/forecasts/latest/six_day

Right in front of El Agujero natural pools, La Guancha has lefts and right breaking over a shallow rock reef.

El Agujero
